What to Anticipate in a Classical Five Element Acupuncture Treatment:
During the first visit, your medical history will be taken for any physical symptoms or imbalances that may have occurred in the past or new conditions currently being experienced. Classical Five Element acupuncture is a holistic approach to healing and health. Therefore, past and current emotional events will be noted in addition. Next, the pulses are read to get an indicator of current energy flow; the flow of Qi in the body. Unlike Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Classical Five Element acupuncture tests for major blocks inhibiting the flow of energy before beginning the treatment. Once these blocks are cleared, it allows for the initial and subsequent treatments to be more successful. A regular treatment consists of taking the pulses and then needling. With Five Element acupuncture, the needles are not left in after being inserted. Once the flow of Qi is restored, the needles are removed and the pulses are checked again. In this way, there is more interaction with the acupuncturist and the needs of the patient's body during the treatment. At the conclusion of a treatment, patients typically leave feeling balanced, restored and rejuvenated. Initially, it is suggested that a patient receive 6-8 weekly treatments in order to achieve and sustain wellness. Once the patient's health is balanced and their pulses are able to be maintained for a week, treatments are extended to every other week. This is continued until the patient is advanced to a maintenance schedule, which for most individuals is one treatment a month. Most patients commonly experience a general sense of overall well being from the result of Five Element acupuncture treatment. Leading a very full life and being a mother to a young child, I benefit greatly from monthly treatments to sustain balance and health. Regular treatments allow me to be a more balanced practitioner as well. |
